Meditation for adult ADD?

Hi,

It's been a while since I posted with my background, but I am going to prevent myself from hyper focusing and repeating anything from my previous post…well that's my intent at the moment, lol.  To summarize I am a 36 year old female, diagnosed with ADD and GAD, and wonder if depression is also a factor.

I have recently discovered the wide range of meditations available on YouTube.  I am really intrigued by the meditations involving varying levels of brain wave frequencies/binaural waves.  Many of these claim to help balance the left/right brain, and depending on the the frequency, can ease a wide range of mental, emotional, and even physical disturbances. Some are specifically designed for those with anxiety, ADD, ADHD, depression, etc. Some are simply geared towards helping one fall asleep.

I have found these to be helpful, still taking my medications, but still helpful, especially for sleep. However, due to my tendency to 'hyper focus' I am wondering if this can be harmful in any way if I do it too often?  I have read that those with Epilepsy should not try without doctor consent, but that is about the only warning…other than doing while driving/operating heavy machinery, lol.

Dr. Handleman, I am curious to hear of your take on this as well as any other forum members which have had experience with this area.

Thank you!

Sorry for the Delay, I should have seen this earlier and responded a long time ago for you hun . and I apologize.

yes, I have done all this, I have read a range of books, videos, etc .. this was a little before youtube .. ( I wouldnt watch or really take things serious from watching youtube ) … but

I have downloaded ( I mean buy ) .. many videos .. yoga, meditation, tapes .. books about brain whatever stuff … etc etc etc ..

I can help you :)

Yes, I have spent the last decade focusing on mastering the left and right brain  … and to tell you the truth, its funny becfause well briefly, the dopamine from a stimulant which would mainly directly focusing on the left side of the brain … ( I know this because it was always the parts that were not open enough from part of my `Inattentive type` \ isolated\ anti-social \ can't get out of bed \ function type of add " ) ..

but with all that, and all the books along side with learning about how to function, how to do things better, how to take control etc ..

I also learned on my own accord about how the brain works and about how MY brain works .. and then went from there ..

—————-

Now, I am sorry, this was not what your question was anyway ..

the Hyperfocus .. well .. this is the problem .. but it isnt ..and I will tell you only from MY own experience in the same way .

1.  You are being treated ( taking medication ) , which is helping greatly .

2. you are doing meditation and other great techniques which would make ANY BODY feel AMAZING

BOTH of those things create such great euphoria and "hyperfocus" alone, which is not so much a bad thing, but you create those or put those things together on themselves .. you may feel "SUPER-HYPER-FOCUSED" …

you shouldnt feel bad about it, as long as it is not affecting you , you just feel great about it if you can continue about your day ..

If if is TOO much for you though, and you are getting way TOO much stimulated out it … and that is GREAT TOO .. you are doing GREAT exercises.. meditations .. etc .. this is PART of the NATURAL ADD therapy stuff anyway .. and then at that point .. well then I guess I would say you would start to lower dose on the meds then ..

but I mean that would be something a Doctor would say , I would just say its a higher step … but only if it is not affecting you .. too much focus or stimulation can be worse then beneficial for you … and that is all pretty I can say then for this issue really before Dr. Kenny Handelman could concur or follow-up for you :-)

Thank You and Good Luck  Caitlin – Please let us know your progress.   Cool
